The Jubilee Center – where God’s work is done!
The Jubilee Center has been a lifeline for the homeless and economically disadvantaged for more than 20 years. Its mission – to provide emergency resources and relief from hunger and despair. This began in 1984 as a small Soup Kitchen and Office of Social Services, working out of a single church in Hollywood. Today, five Episcopal congregations form the Jubilee Center. Services include the Soup Kitchen, serving a hot lunch to the poor each day, and an Office of Social Services providing referrals for employment and emergency shelter, food stamp assistance, bus passes, photo IDs, a food pantry and a supply of hygiene items.
A recent assessment of the homeless showed, “ the great majority were living on the street or in cars. Still others in shelters…” More important locally, are the actual numbers of poor and homeless (over 150) who line up daily at Jubilee to receive emergency assistance for hunger and their personal needs. For the daily meal, we do not assess need – all may come. For Social Services, a volunteer or staff counselor interviews the client, documents relevant needs based on that interview and the client’s prior visits to the Center. In addition to the services listed above we offer work clothing and shoes, job counseling, HIV/AIDS testing, free legal aid, haircuts and more. All services are offered without regard to age, race, sex, religion or other classification.
Our meal is hot, nutritious, about 1800 calorie and alleviates their hunger. This sustains them, permitting them to focus on their other needs and opportunities. Our social services then help with the personal issues that often make it difficlult for a homeless person or family to return to a useful and purposeful life.
The Jubilee Center is open five days a week – Monday – Friday, 52 weeks a year. St James-in-the Hills is one of the five churches that provide volunteers to work at the center and serve on its Board of Directors. The Jubilee Center is St. James’ major outreach to do God’s work in our part of the World. The Center is located at 2020 Scott Street in Hollywood. Check us out at www.jubileecenterbroward.org.
